How to Choose The Best Commercial Web Hosting Service

I know that many articles about this case which contains a guide how to choose the best web hosting services in the Internet.

In this article, I try to use a different approach for those who want to get the best web hosting services with a variety of perspectives that is rarely thought.

All my explanations below are for commercial web hosting services, so not suitable for those of you who want to find a free web hosting services, although there are some criteria that you can use to find free web hosting services.

I used to believe in the concept : “a hosting company that had been in the business for years is the best web hosting”, but things have changed. As I recall, nearly forty percent of all hosting companies out of business during the past year. If you are one of the customers of the hosting company that went out of business, you already have your own horror story to tell.

And these are the criteria of good web hosting service :

1. The reliability and speed of access

Not only the host network must be reliable and fast to ensure uptime. In fact, even 99% uptime is too low – it really should be 99.5% or higher. The host should provide some form of restitution (for example, the apportionment of the refund or discount) if it falls below that figure. However, that the guarantees are often difficult to apply to an end – the host usually requires all sorts of documentation. But without such a guarantee, the network host will have little incentive to ensure that their servers are running all the time. So how do you know if a hosting company is reliable or not? By word of mouth or feedback from others! If that’s not possible then you can yourself try accessing your site during peak hours and non-peak hours too so you can assess how well the speed of your hosting company is.

2. Amount of web space

The provider of web hosting services usually assign a certain amount of space on your server. You need to ensure that there is plenty of space for your site and business requirements. You can expand your online business tomorrow and would require much more space. It is therefore imperative that the web hosting company should be able to give enough space for your site, especially if it is rich in graphics or video clips. Most sites require less than 10 MB of web space, so even if they have a host that offers you with 200 MB or 500 MB (or “unlimited space”), be aware that you will not use all of these 500 MB, so it’s not wise to use the 500 MB of space as a big factor when compared with other hosting companies. The hosting company is also aware of that, which is why they feel free to offer you that as a means of enticing you to host there. 3. Data transfer (Bandwidth)

Data transfer (sometimes loosely referred to as “traffic” or “bandwidth”) is the amount of bytes transferred from your site to visitors when they browse your site. If you want to run ASP language then choose the server with the Windows operating system. Do not use the Linux operating system to run ASP even linux also provides aspx. Why? Because Linux is not used to run the ASP. But if you do not need ASP so the operating system that you must select is Linux.

7. Technical support

Does the web hosting service providers provides you 24×7 support ? Will they be able to respond quickly to your problem ? That is the question you should ask to find the answer directly to the web hosting service provider. Test them via email in the middle of the night and on Saturday night, Sunday morning, etc. Check out how long they take to respond to your email. In addition to speed responses, check to see if they are technically competent. You do not want to sign up to host that run by a bunch of salesmen who only know how to sell and not fix a problem.

8. Pricing plans

I note that although the price is always a crucial factor, you should realize that they often get what you pay for, but is not necessarily true that the most expensive hosts are the best. You should compare prices and services before you choose one.

9. Monthly / quarterly / annual payment plans

Most of the Web host allows you to select the annual payment plan that provides a cheaper rate than if you pay monthly. My personal advice is to pay monthly with all new web hosts until you are sure their reliability and honesty. The advantages of paying monthly is allowing you to switch a web host quickly when you find that the current web hosting company does not meet your requirements, so you do not bound to bad web host because you have prepaid for a year.

TelkomSpeedy sudah tidak bermasalah!

Mengenai keluhan saya sebelumnya, pagi tadi saya coba lagi kontak 147 untuk mencari tahu apakah kira-kira permasalahan tersebut bisa dipecahkan. Tapi kali ini saya sudah cukup banyak membawa data sehingga kalau toh terjadi adu argumentasi dengan pihak telkomspeedy, saya sudah siap gitu loch! Percakapan dengan 147 lumayan baik, tanpa ngotot dan saya bisa menjelaskan keinginan saya dengan gamblang.

Tidak berapa lama (sekitar 1 jam lama gak ya ?) telepon kantor berbunyi menanyakan kembali masalah ini. Saya cerita ulang lagi masalahnya. Dan dijawab “Baik pak, IP server bapak sudah kami catat, nanti bapak kami hubungi lagi”. Tidak berapa lama lagi (mungkin ya sekitar 1,5 jam) HP saya yang berbunyi dari Speedy Jakarta. Kembali saya cerita masalahnya dan sekaligus saya informasikan dimana letak hop yang prosentase packet loss nya hampir 90% (dr2.ix.singtel.com).

“Baik pak akan kami cek, bisa tidak kami dikirimkan hasil traceroute bapak ke email kami di ?????@telkom.co.id ?”

Saya jawab, “Oh bisa pak, segera saya kirim”.

Singkat kata saya kirim dah data traceroutenya dan selang sekitar 2 jam saya coba semua koneksi yang bisanya NTO sekarang sudah tidak lagi. Sampai sore ini saat saya posting artikel ini, NTO sudah tidak terjadi. Semoga selamanya …..

TelkomSpeedy ..ooohh emang gitu to!!

Hampir setahun saya pakai koneksi TelkomSpeedy di rumah dan kantor. Saat itu 10 Agustus 2006 saya dapat telepon dari Telkom Blitar bahwa Speedy hadir di Blitar. Wow.. surprise juga karena setiap saya tanyakan selalu jawabannya prediksi doang .. yang katanya nunggu dari Malang siap, atau nunggu jaringan siap, dan yang terakhir nunggu aja pak kira-kira 3 bulan lagi siap.

Tau kan namanya orang kebelet? Nah itu dia perasaanku saat dapat telepon kalau speedy ada di Blitar. Langsung tancap gas ke Plasa Telkom dan mendaftar. Ya itu tadi.. sama dengan orang kebelet.. kan nggak mau keduluan jadinya pendaftar pertama deh. Mbaknya di Plasa Telkom sampai bilang, “wah bapak pendaftar pertama nih”. Saya jawab aja .. “iya mbak udah kebelet ngerasain speedy, apalagi dapat bonus bebas registrasi dan modem”. Mbaknya mesam-mesem aja.

Kupikir, abis daftar terus dipasang tuh speedy-nya.. eh ternyata masih nunggu lagi.. walah gimana to. Ya nggak apa-apa deh.. yang penting secepatnya dan kata si mbak “iya pak, tunggu 2-3 hari lagi ya pak”. Tunggu punya tunggu udah lebih 3 hari tetap tidak ada kabar.. eh tanggal 16 Agustus 2006 dapat undangan Launching Speedy di salah satu hotel di Blitar. Senang juga … karena berarti Speedyku akan ‘nancap’ di rumahku. Singkat cerita (kalo dipanjangkan bisa berjam-jam lo) saat launching sudah banyak undangan yang menggunakan speedy.. lo berarti mereka dipasang duluan dong. Saya protes nih, saya bilang kalo saya pendaftar pertama tapi tidak mendapat layanan pertama. Untungnya bagian pemasangan baik hati sekali (thanks to Mr. Bangun) mau masang pas hari libur 17 Agustus 2006.

Selama ini saya sangat puas dengan speedy. Ya.. meskipun banyak blog yang nulis speedy lemot atau speedy yang sleepy tapi bagi saya sampai akhir Juni 2007 ini sangat memuaskan. Meskipun beberapa kali terkadang kecepatannya tidak kenceng alias drop tapi sangat jarang terjadi pada saya. Itulah makanya kemudian saya mempromosikan speedy pada bulan Juni kemarin ke kampus saya dan disetujui, jadi punya nunutan juga akhirnya hi hi hi…

Nah… sekarang nah-nya ini yang memang akan terjadi juga. Sejak awal bulan Juli sampai sekarang akhir Juli speedy sudah tidak stabil. Bahkan untuk browsing ke luar IIX sangat lemot. Saya coba melalui kampus juga sama. Hampir satu bulan ini begini. Memang belum pernah saya tanyakan hal ini ke 147 karena menurut banyak pengguna speedy “percuma”. Percuma karena yang menangani bukan ahlinya langsung jadi tidak selesai-selesai. Kalau masalah billing sih oke.. tapi kalau masalah teknis.. ampun deh. Itu kata banyak pengguna di beberapa blog mereka, bahkan juga di forumnya speedy sendiri.

Tapi niatan membiarkan seperti ini tidak berlangsung lama saat sudah 3 hari ini saya dan seluruh civitas akademik di kampus tidak bisa kirim email keluar karena semua IP yang dipakai oleh Speedy kena blokir oleh SPAMHAUS. Biasanya sih aku akali dengan cara disconnect terus connect lagi.. setelah ganti IP biasanya mau. Tapi ini sudah berulangkali ganti IP tetap diblokir semua. Percobaan gonta-ganti IP sudah saya lakukan 3 hari belakangan dan tidak berhasil. Pesannya selalu sama, IP kena blokir seperti dibawah ini :

Receive error: “550-Message rejected because (home) [xx.xx.xx.xx] is blacklisted at 550-zen.spamhaus.org see http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=xx.xx.xx.xx
550 Contact your ISP about this!”

Akhirnya nyerah juga aku, hari ini sekitar jam 2 siang aku telepon 147. Ditanya permasalahannya terus aku jawab panjang lebar .. eh ternyata solusinya tidak langsung karena sepertinya yang nerima memang cuma menerima keluhan aja. “Tunggu ya pak.. nanti ada petugas yang menghubungi bapak”. Oke deh.. nunggu lagi. Pas jam 4 sore ada juga yang telepon nanya kembali .

“Pak ada masalah dengan speedy”

Tidak pak, hanya saya tidak bisa kirim email keluar. Saya coba pakai ISP lain bisa pak, hanya pakai speedy saya tidak bisa. Sudah 3 hari ini lo pak tidak bisa kirim email.

“Bisa browsing pak”

Bisa pak, hanya email yang tidak bisa kirim keluar pakai koneksi speedy. Menurut server penerima, IP speedy kena blokir di spamhaus pak.

“Wah biasanya kalau kena blokir tidak bisa browsing pak”

$#!@$#^$^ maaf pak.. yang kena blokir itu hanya pengiriman email.

“Baik pak.. nanti kami hubungi lagi setelah saya tanyakan ke pak.. (saya lupa nama yang disebut)”

Oke.. akhirnya saya nunggu lagi.. tapi tidak lama, sekitar 15 menit si bapak dari telkom telepon lagi :

“Bapak pakai yahoo mail atau pakai ekpres?”

Ha… &$% pake outlook pak .. tidak ada hubungannya dengan yahoo mail. (Dalam hati saya pikir.. kalo pake yahoo mail ngapain komplen ke speedy ??)

“Oo.. berarti pake ekpres pak…”

Mmm.. ya deh pak pake ekpres…

“Kalau itu setingannya pak biasanya, soalnya untuk browsing kan bisa”

Gini pak, di internet itu kan ada semacam otoritas penghalang spam yang banyak dipakai oleh mailserver seperti spamhaus … nah IP speedy yang saya coba semuanya terdaftar atau kena blacklist di spamhaus itu. Jadi ISP manapun yang IPnya masuk ke spamhaus tidak akan bisa kirim email ke mailserver yang memakai spamhaus sebagai penyaring spamnya. Jadi tidak ada hubungannya dengan browsing.

“O gitu ya pak… kalau gitu nanti saya tanyakan lagi.. soalnya ini sudah sore dan semuanya sudah pulang. Besok kami hubungi lagi pak”

Gedubrak … *&%^%#% …. maunya tambah ringan sudah mengeluarkan unek-unek soal masalah kirim email ini.. eh tambah stress sekarang. Waduh gimana nih, Speedy yang kualitas Nasional tapi ternyata teknisi atau customer service – nya kok sepertinya tidak tau apa-apa. Seharusnya Telkom merekrut tenaga ahli yang mengerti teknis internet untuk ditempatkan di kota-kota layanan Speedy.

Sebagai ISP dan pemegang hak otoritas IP yang digunakan pelanggannya, semestinya pihak Speedy melakukan pemantauan terjadwal atas semua IP-nya apakah masuk ke dalam pemblokiran dan jika masuk kena blokir di spamhaus, pihak speedy segera menghubungi spamhaus dan memberikan alasan kenapa IPnya sampai kena blokir agar pemblokiran IP ini bisa dihapus.

Jadinya setelah mengalami ini cuma bisa bilang … ooohh emang gitu to telkom-speedy!! Maaf, ini bukan untuk mendiskreditkan ISP ini, tapi lebih pada keinginan saya untuk menjadikan TelkomSpeedy lebih baik lagi, karena saya “masih” pemakai setia TelkomSpeedy
