Firefox Search Bar and Google Suggestions

I have read about Google Suggestions a long ago on some articles but i can’t find it again. They said that sometimes Google’s suggestion script is either wishing really bad things on us or just for having fun. So today i have tried this suggestion thing from my firefox and i found some interesting suggestions :

Type in “KPK” on search bar and one of the suggestion is “kpk ukulele” :

In Indonesia, KPK is Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi and Ukulele is a music instrument.

Type in “i really hope” on search bar and one of the suggestion is “i really hope it’s you michael franks” :

About Michael Frank, i’m sure that i do not know who is Michael Frank.

Type in “indigo” on search bar and one of the suggestion is “indigo bunting” :

Bunting in Indonesia language is pregnant.

I’m sure that if you are creative there’s still plenty of funny suggestions there. Just try yourself.

Bing will go to the next level after Microsoft Marries Yahoo

This year, Yahoo give us a lot of shocking news. After last year Microsoft offer turn down by Yahoo, and 2nd quarter of this year Yahoo announce to close Geocities, and now Microsoft has announced that it has partnered with Yahoo in order to create a stronger no. 2 on the search engine market to go against Google. Through the marriage, after over a year and a half of off-again on-again speculation and failed negotiations, Microsoft and Yahoo have combined their search engine and online advertising businesses in order to close the gap separating both companies from Google. Under the agreement, Microsoft’s Bing search engine will power Yahoo search on all Yahoo sites. At the same time, Yahoo will take on the role of exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for itself and for Microsoft, and will deal directly with both of the companies’ premium search advertisers.

CEO Carol Bartz stated earlier this year that it would take Microsoft boatloads of money to get Yahoo. While there is no money upfront, according to the financial terms of the agreement disclosed, Bartz still managed to get her wish. The Yahoo CEO indicates that the partnership with Microsoft brings to the table “boatloads of value” for Yahoo, for its users, and for the industry. As far as Yahoo is concerned, the company is expecting its annual operating income to get a boost of approximately $500 million. Current estimates reveal that Yahoo expects expenditure savings of about $200 million, with a forecasted $275 million extra to annual operating cash flow.

“Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers, and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company,” revealed Steve Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive officer. “Success in search requires both innovation and scale. With our new Bing search platform, we’ve created breakthrough innovation and features. This agreement with Yahoo! will provide the scale we need to deliver even more rapid advances in relevancy and usefulness. Microsoft and Yahoo! know there’s so much more that search could be. This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search.”

Microsoft and Yahoo promised that the deal was designed to offer an evolved web search experience to benefit not only end users but also advertisers. At the same time, the Redmond company noted that the partnership would ensure sustained innovation to the industry. Neither Microsoft nor Yahoo have made it a secret that they would flex their combined search engine muscles to go against Google.

Data from an advertising company : Bing Users Are 55 % More Likely to Click on Ads

Microsoft’s new search engine Bing has been a relative success for the company, if not in user numbers, which may have risen slightly in the past month, though sources are often contradictory, then by the large amount of mostly positive press it has been getting almost two months since it was launched. And now there seems to be another reason why Microsoft execs should be patting themselves on the back as data from search-advertising network Chitika shows that Bing users are 55 percent more likely to click on an ad in a site they are visiting, compared to Google users.

“We at Chitika are quite fond of search engines: since all of our ads serve only to search traffic, they’re our bread and butter in the online world. So with Microsoft’s new Bing decision engine making so much noise, we thought we’d take a closer look at the clickthrough rates of visitors from the three major search players: Yahoo!, Google, and Bing,” Dan Ruby, director of marketing at Chitika, said about the reasoning behind the study.

The study looked at ads on 50,000 sites in Chitika’s network, which generated 32 million impressions in a week this month. The findings show that users who landed on the sites coming from a Bing search were more likely to click on an ad, with clickthrough rates of 1.5 percent. Meanwhile, only 1.24 percent of those coming from Yahoo’s search engine clicked on ads on the sites, with Google users coming dead last following on ads only in 0.97 percent of the cases.

While the data is interesting in itself, does it really say anything about the ad market or Bing for that matter? One could assume that the fact that Bing users are more likely to click on ads is a characteristic of the whole group and not just an unrelated coincidence. One could even speculate, like TechCrunch does, that they are using Bing in the first place because they are more susceptible to ads, as Microsoft has been pouring tens of millions in an ad campaign for the search engine. Still it may not have anything to do with the product itself but rather with the fact that it has such a small audience.

What is Internet Addiction ? If you want to know about it, please answer these questions : Are you addicted to your online connection? Are you one of those crazy folks that can’t wait to read the email with your morning coffee?

Doctors are calling it serious addiction combined with: Cybersexual Addiction, Computer Addiction and Cyber-Relational Addiction. They even managed to stamp the cool names for it, like Internet Addictive Disorder (IAD) or the Internet Overuse Syndrome (IOS). According to Kimberly S. Young, PhD, from the University of Pittsburgh, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, has defined Internet addiction, based on criteria from the DSM-IV for pathological gambling, as having 5 or more of the following symptoms: preoccupation with the Internet, a need to spend more time online to get the same satisfaction, unsuccessful attempts to decrease use, feeling restless or irritable when attempting to cut back, often staying online much longer than intended, secretive behavior/lying about online pursuits, distress or dysfunction as a result of this behavior, or use of the Internet to self-medicate (eg, to overcome depression).

Lying to others about how much time you spend online. A sign of most addictions, if you need to lie, then you have something to hide.
Using the internet as a way to escape from problems or negative emotions – Soothing yourself after a hard day with online time, is a dangerous habit.
Experiencing any significant work or school performance detriments, or relationship harms out of your online habits. If you find yourself staying up very late at night and missing work or class, for example, this could be indicative of a problem.
Observing the development of a tolerance – If you find that you need ever longer periods of time online to achieve satisfaction, you are developing a tolerance to the internet.
Cravings to use and withdrawal symptoms are a telltale sign of a problem. If you get anxious or irritable when you cannot get online, when your PDA battery dies or when you get interrupted online, you may be showing withdrawal symptoms.

Based on the latest research and simple human reasoning. Internet addiction should not be labeled as addiction like gambling or drug addiction. There should be a strict line that distances other addictions from the “internet addiction”. Staying in touch with your friends or watching funny YouTube videos is not a destructive behavior which usually characterizes major addictions.

If you gamble on the internet then you are not addicted to the internet, but online gambling. Internet is a wonderful tool, but like everything else in this Universe there is the sunny side and the dark side of the pyramid of life.

Shocking!! YAHOO is shutting down GeoCities, a free service that hosts personal home pages for its member, which it acquired for $US 4.6 billion in 1999. According to a post at YAHOO Help page, new accounts are no longer being accepted for GeoCities.

“GeoCities, known for its gaudy design, was a cutting edge service in the late 1990s that was later overtaken by blogs and social networking sites like MySpace. After buying GeoCities, Yahoo failed to make significant upgrades to the site, although it still had 12 million unique visitors in March, according to comScore”, SFGates.com said. In recent months, the Sunnyvale Internet company has dropped several products, including the FareChase travel search engine and the Briefcase online storage service, as new CEO Carol Bartz tries to engineer a turnaround amid slumping profits.

Later this year YAHOO will be closing all GeoCities accounts and web sites this summer. If you are a member of GeoCities customers, you can continue to enjoy their sites and GeoCities services until later this year. You don’t need to change a thing right now — YAHOO will let you know about the closure as soon as possible and more details about closing GeoCities and how to save your site data this summer, and YAHOO will update the help center with more details at that time.

What is http referrer ? According to Wikipedia, HTTP Referrer — also known by the common misspelling referer that occurs as a HTTP header — identifies, from the point of view of an internet webpage or resource, the address of the webpage (commonly the URL, the more generic URI or the i18n updated IRI) of the resource which links to it. By checking the referrer, the new page can see where the request came from.

Referrer logging is used to allow websites and web servers to identify where people are visiting them from, for promotional or security purposes. Referrer is a popular tool to combat cross-site request forgery, but such security mechanisms do not work when the referrer is disabled. Referrer is widely used for statistical purposes.

Many web sites log referrers as part of their attempt to track their users. Most web log analysis software can process this information. As referrer information can violate privacy, some browsers allow the user to disable the sending of referrer information. If you want to stop Firefox Browser from sending the referrer, here is how to do it :

In the address bar of your Firefox browser type: about:config and hit Enter.

In the Filter input field type: network.http.sendRefererHeader.

Double click on the preference name.

Change the value from 2 to 0 and hit OK.

The downside of http referrer if disabled on your browser is you can not logon to the site that using content based on referrer.

How to Choose The Best Commercial Web Hosting Service

I know that many articles about this case which contains a guide how to choose the best web hosting services in the Internet.

In this article, I try to use a different approach for those who want to get the best web hosting services with a variety of perspectives that is rarely thought.

All my explanations below are for commercial web hosting services, so not suitable for those of you who want to find a free web hosting services, although there are some criteria that you can use to find free web hosting services.

I used to believe in the concept : “a hosting company that had been in the business for years is the best web hosting”, but things have changed. As I recall, nearly forty percent of all hosting companies out of business during the past year. If you are one of the customers of the hosting company that went out of business, you already have your own horror story to tell.

And these are the criteria of good web hosting service :

1. The reliability and speed of access

Not only the host network must be reliable and fast to ensure uptime. In fact, even 99% uptime is too low – it really should be 99.5% or higher. The host should provide some form of restitution (for example, the apportionment of the refund or discount) if it falls below that figure. However, that the guarantees are often difficult to apply to an end – the host usually requires all sorts of documentation. But without such a guarantee, the network host will have little incentive to ensure that their servers are running all the time. So how do you know if a hosting company is reliable or not? By word of mouth or feedback from others! If that’s not possible then you can yourself try accessing your site during peak hours and non-peak hours too so you can assess how well the speed of your hosting company is.

2. Amount of web space

The provider of web hosting services usually assign a certain amount of space on your server. You need to ensure that there is plenty of space for your site and business requirements. You can expand your online business tomorrow and would require much more space. It is therefore imperative that the web hosting company should be able to give enough space for your site, especially if it is rich in graphics or video clips. Most sites require less than 10 MB of web space, so even if they have a host that offers you with 200 MB or 500 MB (or “unlimited space”), be aware that you will not use all of these 500 MB, so it’s not wise to use the 500 MB of space as a big factor when compared with other hosting companies. The hosting company is also aware of that, which is why they feel free to offer you that as a means of enticing you to host there. 3. Data transfer (Bandwidth)

7. Technical support

Does the web hosting service providers provides you 24×7 support ? Will they be able to respond quickly to your problem ? That is the question you should ask to find the answer directly to the web hosting service provider. Test them via email in the middle of the night and on Saturday night, Sunday morning, etc. Check out how long they take to respond to your email. In addition to speed responses, check to see if they are technically competent. You do not want to sign up to host that run by a bunch of salesmen who only know how to sell and not fix a problem.

8. Pricing plans

The advantages of paying monthly is allowing you to switch a web host quickly when you find that the current web hosting company does not meet your requirements, so you do not bound to bad web host because you have prepaid for a year.

Ini bukan guyonan, karena memang benar-benar terjadi. Saat baca di detikInet ada headline berjudul “Bank Jateng Dibobol Cracker” membuat keingintahuan yang besar membaca artikelnya detik.

Sebelum situs tersebut kena crack saya belum pernah nyambangi situsnya bank jateng jadi tidak tahu apakah disitu ada fasilitas internet banking-nya atau hanya sekedar portal informasi saja.

Kalau ada ibank-nya, wah benar-benar berbahaya menjadi pengguna ibank-nya bank jateng. Kalau hanya sebatas portal informasi saja, ya masih bisa dimaklumi apa lagi kalau pakai produk CMS opensource. Bukannya CMS Open Source berarti tidak aman, hanya Admin portal harus rajin-rajin update versi terbaru saat developer CMS tersebut mengeluarkan versi update terbaru. Susahnya adalah kalau produk CMS Open Source ini adalah hasil jualan dari para “opreker” yang mengoprek CMS ini sehingga layak jual (versi operakan) ke instansi tertentu dengan harga yang lumayan, maka kadang-kadang versi update terbaru tidak cocok dengan versi oprekan sehingga tidak bisa di update. Kalau sudah begini, minta pada pembuat “oprekan” atau opreker tersebut untuk meng-update-nya.

Latar belakang halaman situs berubah menjadi warna hitam yang disertai sejumlah tulisan, “HackeD by v3n0m. Your Bank Security is null,” bunyi salah satu pesan pelaku.

Selain itu, pelaku juga menyusupkan foto wanita cantik yang dikatakan bernama Jovita dan merupakan mahasiswi fakultas ilmu komunikasi Universitas Atmajaya, Jogjakarta. ( ash / faw )

Sampai saat ini (8 Januari 2009 pk. 10:14 AM) saat saya sambangi situs bank jateng masih belum beres karena hasil loading browser saya terus looping proses yang tidak selesai-selesai.

Google urges IE6 Gmail users to switch to Firefox, Chrome

The battle between Google and Microsoft continues. On my other post about Google and Microsoft battle, Microsoft almost drag Yahoo in the middle of it. TechSpot reported that Gmail (webmail services owned by Google) now serves up messages to IE6 users when they log in, telling them that by switching to a browser like Chrome or Firefox 3, their speed when interacting with Gmail will be “twice as fast”.

Yes, twice faster when login and accessing Gmail system than using IE6. The question is how about IE7 ? Gmail also pulled the same message from being displayed to IE7 users. But the fact that IE6 still represents a substantial portion of the browser market today is the reason for Google through Gmail to tell their user to switch their browser away from IE6.

Apakah smtp telkom menggunakan software versi evaluation copy ?

Hampir 3 hari ini saya susah mengirimkan email ke telkom.net dan inipun di-amini oleh beberapa kolega dan teman kami. Kalaupun email sudah terkirim dari software mail-client (seperti thunderbird, courier, outlook, dll) itupun akan mentok di queue mailserver. Selidik punya selidik ternyata ada yang menarik, beberapa smtp yang digunakan oleh telkom.net menggunakan software versi evaluation copy dan masa evaluasinya sudah expired (?).

Saya coba cek melalui fasilitas ConfigServer Mail Queues di server kami dan hasilnya :
