September 12th, 2010 | 6 Comments | Posted in Indonesiana

Seventeen year-old Indonesian Rio Haryanto has secured a Formula One test after completing his first GP3 season. The Virgin team offered the prize at the beginning of the year to the driver that finished highest in GP3 in a Manor Racing-entered car.

The Manor team share race shop facilities with the Virgin outfit and is run by Virgin team principal John Booth.

Haryanto came to GP3 after dominating the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific series with 11 wins. He clinched one victory in GP3 this year and took a further two podiums, finishing the season fifth in the standings. His three Manor team mates, James Jakes, Adrian Quaife-Hobbs and Adrien Tambay, finished in eighth, 15th and 20th respectively.

Haryanto’s test will take place after the end of the Formula One season.

The prize was offered courtesy of Virgin’s links with the Manor Racing team, with the best-placed of the junior squad’s drivers getting the chance to sample F1 power. Despite not having raced much in Europe prior to 2010, Haryanto came to the new series having dominated last year’s Formula BMW Pacific Championship, where he took eleven wins, and showed that he had no problem in mixing it with the cream of racing’s next generation as he took GP3 victory in Turkey, as well as finishing on the podium several times.

Well, to start with, the title was very misleading. I thought a “virgin test” was done on a particular Indonesian GP3 driver. Quite funny, isn’t it? Jokes apart but this guy Rio Haryanto seems to be the next sensation in Grand Prix. Mark my words, this boy is going to be a big name soon.

Rio Haryanto dominated Formula BMW Pacific in 2009, amassing eleven first-place finishes en route to a 70-point championship winning margin. In 2010, Haryanto also won the right to test with Virgin at the end of 2010 F1 season as he finishes as the highest ranked Manor driver in the GP3 final classement. He is climbing on the success ladder fast.
