Google urges IE6 Gmail users to switch to Firefox, Chrome
The battle between Google and Microsoft continues. On my other post about Google and Microsoft battle, Microsoft almost drag Yahoo in the middle of it. TechSpot reported that Gmail (webmail services owned by Google) now serves up messages to IE6 users when they log in, telling them that by switching to a browser like Chrome or Firefox 3, their speed when interacting with Gmail will be “twice as fast”.
Yes, twice faster when login and accessing Gmail system than using IE6. The question is how about IE7 ? Gmail also pulled the same message from being displayed to IE7 users. But the fact that IE6 still represents a substantial portion of the browser market today is the reason for Google through Gmail to tell their user to switch their browser away from IE6.
You can read more information at TechSpot.

Saya masih pakai setia Firefox di bawah Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex… (soalnya IE nggak bisa dipasang langsung di Ubuntu tanpa Wine, hehehe)…
Salam kenal, makasih kunjungannya…

While Google might not offer “select features to a handful of browsers of its liking” it DOES have considerable power to force browsers to adhere to HTML (and other) standards. Think of the number of pages that (used to) render well only under IE because they took advantage of non-standard IE behavior. In order for Google to “make nice” with particular browsers, both it an the browser will likely have to be ignoring some standard, which would be a bad thing for both of them.

IE is awful. I just spent the last week with Microsoft tech support trying to get my PC out of IE hell. When I went to upgrade to IE7 there was a problem and I ended up with a really weird hybrid version of IE6 and IE7. I would never even open IE if I didn’t need it for work. It just so happens that IE is the only supported browser for a website that I need to access every day. I still use firefox for everything else.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Google was messing with Microsoft with this one.

The battle of google vs microsoft will be going on for years to come. I personally have always enjoyed explorer, but recently started using firefox due to all the neat plug-ins they have. This tactic Google is using may technically be right, but seems a little manipulative to me.

I personally like Chrome very much. It’s smooth, faster and has a cool interface.

Google does not do this to be vindictive or show a competitive streak to undermine Microsoft, there is a genuine concern for the users of gmail to make sure that they have a better user experience. They are not stupid and are aware that it will take more then gimmick to get the lion share of the browser space

Indeed, IE is horrible! But I much prefer Firefox than Chrome due to several indispensable plugins.

I’m using FierFox and Chrome at the same time. I like more FF but Chrome browse faster. I don’t know what to do, switch to Chrome or not…

Im a FF user but not for much longer if they do not clean up their browser. It’s crashing constantly nowadays and IE seems to be running twice as fast. Love Chrome but needs more functionality and plugins, as soon as they come i’ll be switching to Chrome perm.

I like firefox! specially for webdesigning as all my designs show properly unlike with IE that you have to include some hack to display it properly.

I always use firefox but the majority of the people who visit my site use internet explorer (and most of them ie6). I think asking someone to switch when they view your site is kind of wrong, and some people might take it the wrong way.. like ” if you don’t like my browser i just wont use your site”

I really don’t think Google vs Microsoft is a battle, more like Google just completely backhands Microsoft when it comes to Internet stuff such as email, maps, search engine along with many other things. I don’t like anything by Microsoft, not even Windows, so I fully support Chrome and Firefox as they are definitely faster when it comes to loading Gmail along with just about every webpage that is out there.
