What is Antivirus ?

January 4th, 2009 | 8 Comments | Posted in AppDev

dashboardThis article is addition to my review about antivirus.  Antivirus is a software to identify and block computer’s viruses before they can infect your computer or destroy all your data. When you install it, it is important that you must have up to date virus information database.

There are a lot of antivirus software on the market today. Although details may vary between packages, anti-virus software scans files or your computer’s memory for certain patterns that may indicate an infection. The patterns it looks for are based on the signatures, or definitions, of known viruses.

Virus authors are continually releasing new and updated viruses, so it is important that you have the latest definitions installed on your computer.

What happens if the software detects a virus?

Each package has its own method of response when it detects a virus, and the answer may vary depending on whether the software locates the virus during an automatic or a manual scan. Sometimes the software produces a warning dialog box that a virus has been found and asks if you want to “cleanse” the file (to eliminate the virus). In other cases, the software can try to eliminate the virus without asking first. When selecting an anti-virus package to become familiar with its features so you know what to expect.

How do you get the current virus information?

This process may vary depending on the product you choose, to find out what your anti-virus software requires. Many antivirus include an option to automatically receive updated virus definitions. Due to the new information is added frequently, it’s a good idea to take advantage of this option. Are reluctant to believe chain letters e-mail which claimed that a well-known anti-virus vendor has recently detected the “worst virus in history” that will destroy your computer’s hard drive. These emails are hoaxes. The virus can confirm the information through your anti-virus through suppliers or resources offered by other anti-virus vendors.  While installing anti-virus software is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your computer, has its limitations. Because it is based on signatures, anti-virus software can only detect the virus signatures that have been installed on your computer, so it’s important to keep these signatures to date. You will still be susceptible to viruses that circulate before the anti-virus vendors add their signatures in order to continue to take other security precautions as well.

What software should I use?

There are many vendors who produce anti-virus software, and decide which one to choose can be confusing. All anti-virus software performs the same function, so your decision may be driven by the recommendations, in particular, features, price or availability. Installing any anti-virus software, regardless of the package you choose, it increases their level of protection. Be careful, however, e-mails that are intended to include anti-virus software. Some recent viruses arrive as an email supposedly from your Internet service provider’s technical support department, which contains an attachment claiming to be the anti-virus software. However, the attachment is actually a virus, so it could become infected by opening it.

AV is a pretty important piece of software but I think many vendora are looking to move to Application Whitelisting as a means to defeat malware. Admittedly, it’s a relatively new technology and mainly confined to the corporate world right but might be worth an article so that people understand the differences/benefits.

Another useful feaure of good antivirus software is Scheduling. This way you can leave your computer ON while having breakfast or taking shower and it will run a scan automatically. I also like programs that are careful about CPU resources and use a little of system memory.
